Setting up VPN connections using OpenVPN 2.0 (for Windows XP and 2000 only)


Install the OpenVPN software

1. Download the OpenVPN software from their site.

2. On the left side under "What's New",  Download the Windows Version.

3. Choose a download mirror and click to download.  Save to your desktop.

4. Double-click the openvpn-2.0-install.exe to install on your computer.

5. Answer next, I agree, yes, etc. to all of the questions.  The defaults are fine.

6. When finished, you can delete the OpenVPN install program.

Configure the OpenVPN Software

1. Obtain a diskette from Jeff with the config file, encryption keys, and setup batch file.

2. Put the diskette in your floppy drive and go to Start-Run.

3. In the drop down box next to Open, put this command in a:\setupvpn.bat.  Hit enter.

4. This should copy the config and keys to your openvpn directory.

Running the OpenVPN Software

1. Go to Start-Programs-OpenVPN-OpenVPN configuration file directory.

2. You should see an your-company-name.ovpn file there.

3. Right-click the file.  Choose Start OpenVPN on this config file.

4. This will open a dos command window with status messages.

5. This window has four function key assignments on the title bar.

6. Use F4 to exit and stop the OpenVPN tunnel.

7. You can also use F3 to reconnect if you connection goes down for any reason.

8. Leave this window open or minimize it.  Don't close it while using the VPN tunnel.
